Journey to Find Me a New Car

Well, I am in the process of buying a new car. I have been wanting to do this for such a long time ( Car thread 1 Car Thread 2 ), except the conditions werent right to allow this. But now... Being in the UK and working full time, and my current car on its way out, I thought it time for a change. What I would like from you guys is to comment on the cars I test. I really havent been on many test drives in the past.

I am still not 100% set, but by a process of elimination, I think an e46 330i (coupe or sedan) will be the best option. This has been decided using the following reasoning:
1) Needs to be at least 6 cylinders (love the sound of a straight 6 and V8)
2) Needs to be manual - I want to feel involved in the driving
3) Needs to be relatively cheap to maintain (Sadly excluding M cars - at least for the short term)
4)Should have the potential to be modified into a track car at some point
5) Preferably not tubo charged, but definitely petrol powered.

They are pretty much in order of importance, perhaps 3) should be higher though. By this logic, my criteria eliminates a few cars. So realistically this leaves:
130i, 330i, 540i, 545i, 550i, 650i. (That list looks smaller than I thought). The 5 series are very limited in terms of numbers - because I want a manual. But there are a few 6 series with manual floating around.

As part of this process I need to test drive a number of cars...

I test drove my first car today. It was really cheap, but knew it was a good one to start with as alot would be wrong with it.

So here goes...

1) 330i (Link here)
2001 Model, 125000 Miles (+- 200 000kms), silver, £1990 (R30 000), 5 Speed M/T.

The pictures are quite deceiving. There is actually alot of curbing, and there is rust on all the wheel arches.

The car drives ok, not great though. It seems to pull the left while coasting and the right when braking. There is slight judder on pull away (felt through the clutch pedal - is this perhaps a dual mass flywheel?). There may be play in the shifting mechanism as it struggles a bit to get into reverse. Clutch may be slipping, because I was expecting abit more in terms of acceleration. The right front wheel is wearing on the inside - which is ok, but why not the left too? Airbag light was ON! Looks like the water pump has been repaired cheaply. Light blue compound around the valve cover seal - perhaps gasket sealer? The car was serviced 6 times - roughly every 20 000 miles - originally by main dealers then some random places. Cruise control works, as do the other functions I checked. Although I did find this:

">Radio from Apple Hero on Vimeo.

I have read about it, but never seen it. Can't remember off the top of my head how this happens, but has something to do with the rear electronics.

From the mechanical side, I heard a noise from the engine - but unsure if its normal (input would be appreciated).

I am a little deflated after the drive. I knew it wouldnt be awesome, but was expecting a bit more feeding from the car. Did like the sound though. Didnt manage to open her up too much.

Comments welcome.

I would give this one a miss...

I would start with your first choice (130) and try my utmost to get one in good condition...and test drive it.

In your list only the 130 would make my list...sorry can help any further.

Modding and possible track potential,I would follow Twinz sentiment and go for the 130i. Very decent cars with good power to weight. The other cars are more grand tourers which are awesome, but lack in driver involvement somewhat.

550i and 650i are however great cars, but to limit initial outlay and still have bucket lods of fun, find yourself a well spec'd low mileage 130i

Applehero, as a fellow UK resident I'm going to advise against a 6 cyl petrol- have you seen the fuel prices recently and there's going to be a further 4p increase in the coming week ( supposedly ). Go for a 330d instead, can be tuned and tracked, just as they did on top gear.M sport config , in the e46 will mean 18 inch Staggered MVs, so there's a need for tyres and they cost. Also, depending on yr no claims insurance- with 5 yrs no claims bonus , insurance will probably cost you£400/£600 a year.Adrian Flux is a good co for sports car insurance . Happy to provide more advice--- oh and lastly, cars are cheaper in the north than they are in London and surrounding areas

@Twinz: To be honest, I do quite like the 130. It was the car that really concreted my interest in BMW. From a few articles I have read, I heard that the N52 wasnt gret. Upon further review, its in a lot of cars - so its something to look at. :=):

@ Upincoming: The 130 is 40kg lighter than the 330i, with 20 kW more power. Not bad... Making a bit more sense now. When I think about the bigger cars I keep changing my mind to want them more...

@Jerez: I am a little against diesels to be honest. I drove a 120d for 5 years. It was an awesome drive, loads of fun. But I kept wanting that sings at high RPM's. There are large gains to be had with diesels though. There are a few gems up north, but seems a bit risky getting all the way there in case the car isnt great. Adrian Flux you say... Where abouts are they based?

Thanks for the comments guys...

They are based in Norfolk but contact details area Available on google with a free callback service- they also advertise in the Performance BMW magazine and come recommended by M3cutters forum members.by the way- just browses EBay and for around £3k you could go upto a 2002 330i. Also browse Pistonheads.co.uk- this is a small island- if you drive for more than 4hrs from east to west , you'll drive off the island so don't put off travelling for a good deal. Most cars are well cared for with full service history. Good luck

also would suggest the 130i,also a 330d but you said you dont want one,but maybe worth it too have a look anyway.i would avoid any car with rust,as its costs alot to repair,

another thing is,if jerez is based in the north and you see a car worth looking at,couldnt he check it out for you?,then if he says its okay then the trip north would be worth it,just an idea.

@Jerez: Okay, thanks... Sounds like an idea. When I have something in mind I will give them a call. Seems that the 130i is slightly more expensive in terms of insurance - but not massively.

It seems like there arent tons about.

@Herr BMW: Thats an idea, would have to check with Jerez obviously. But would need to be a solid car otherwise...

too may things wrong with that 330i... the pulling could be Rear Trailing arms but with the rust and possible accident damage i would not even consider it...

on your list the 130i and the 330i will be the way to go if you want to track it :)

@Jerez: Thanks bud! Appreciate it. Would help alot.

@Moranor: Yeah, I have to agree with you on that. It is truly horrendous! But good to see where things can go wrong. I keep going between the 130 and 330 in my mind. Especially when I start looking at one's a little more expensive.

Been searching a bit more. I found the Clubsport version... Basically just a styling difference to the m-sport. Advert HERE

I am not sure why - I dont like spoilers on cars (they do exactly what their name suggests) but I kind of like it on this car...

Well... As an update, Test drove a 130i today. Wow, what a difference to the e46 330i! Sounds the business, so smooth and just wants to go. Its much more expensive, but by SA standards not that pricey.

Apparently it has 25 000 Kms on the clock! Selling for R160 000. Lovely car really.

Wow that's a beauty. I see it's a 55 plate, aren't there any newer ones which are within your price range, possibly which also include Xenon lights? - or those aren't a necessity for you?

There are newer ones available... with decent mileage and relatively new. Xenons I dont worry about it too much. There are a few with sat-nav too - always wanted that...

This one ticks all the boxes... Autotrader2

Has the budget gone up... If so, got a good guy at Sytner Alpina / BMW Nottingham , the place we buy our cars from. Guy searches the dealer database and offers you the car before it goes into the Approved Used website. Prices are fair and there's an enthusiast who works at the parts division who advisors well.

Apple hero, I must say thy if you're starting to look in te £10k then the worlds your oyster - 2005/6 330i and 330d are plentiful- one one owner and full service history - there are a few on Pistonheads . E46 M3s galore- my search for an M car started with the e46 - 2001/2004 for under £10k. If the budgets increased then that too is great
