technical E90 20d strange noise

Hi guys,

So I’ve notice this strange noise coming from my rear wheels..
It kind of sounds like a scrubbing sound, like something is rubbing against something.
It’s definitely not the humming sounds wheel bearings make.

Jacked the car up a few weeks back and spun the back wheels and you can actually clearly hear it when spinning the wheels.

I’ve checked for stones or anything like that, found nothing.

Anyone had the same issue?

My bet would be that the handbrake linings are due for replacement.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

Worst case scenario I thought would be the diff.

No need to replace the discs right? I had my rear discs replaced mid last year.

You won't necessarily have to replace the discs seeing as you replaced them last year.

Once you get the discs off you should be able to diagnose the issue which could be worn shoes but also be that something has shifted due to worn shoes and lack of adjustment.

I had an issue where my handbrake cables had stretched and I couldn't set my handbrake to hold no matter what, even bought new shoes. There was literally a millimeter or two difference between old and new cables and now the handbrake holds.

Read up on how to replace and adjust shoes as you need to depress the locking pin under the handbrake in the cabin first.

When this happened on my 330d ,I didn't have to replace the discs.The one pad/lining sort of delaminated from the steel shoe itself and caused a weird grinding sound.

My 330d's diff also broke 6 days after buying the car back in 2017 ,but it was humming a helluva lot the day before it gave up the ghost. I haven't heard of many diff issues on E90's before,mine was quite an anomaly.
