E46 M3 Supercharged TLC!

I received a call about 8 months ago, asking for a MAF sensor for an E46 M3, luckily I had one in stock. About half an hour after the call, a beautiful grey E46 M3 arrived at PSR.

The car had been supercharged and required a new MAF sensor in order to get it running. The owner and builder both arrived and answered all my questions, I was very excited because a local company was going to retail supercharger kits.

I stayed in contact with the owner and provided advise from time to time.

3 weeks ago, I get a phone call from the owner. He explained to me that the car had been to 6 different shops and it could not be tuned over a period of 8 months.

What I didnt realize was that when the car came for the MAF sensor, It was running a stock map and stock injectors. This made me apprehensive, But I agreed to sort the car out. Since then it had been flashed several times and the injectors had been changed to 650cc bosch red devils.

Because the ecu had been flashed so many times, I was worried that it would soon lock. Off to the Uk it went for repairs, and 2 weeks later, It was back. A base map had already been loaded on the 'new' ecu.

The map was an Alpha N supercharger map for a Manual pre facelift E46 M3.

The car was having some touch up work done at a panel beater. I went with the owner to reinstall the ecu.

I looked over the build and noticed a few problems, The owner and I discussed changes to be made at length.

The M3 wouldnt start, it cranked over and as it came to life, it immediately died.

The problem was the Injectors, 650cc for .5 bar boost.. Its not going to work on this application.

With the car now at Project Shift, new injectors ordered and some enhancements to the kit, the car should be running with in the next week.

Ill post some pics tomorrow.

Details of the current kit:

Rotex supercharger, self oiled with external oil cooler
650cc injectors to be changed to 450cc bosch
Water cooled system with the charge cooler located in the intake manifold.
Intake to be changed to Mafless to accommodate the Alpha N tune.

**Note, We cannot take credit for designing the kit, We will be mapping the car and changing a few of the kit specs in order to make the car run efficiently.

Great stuff!!

Im interested in the ECU "lock" after being flashed too many times. :dunno:
Please explain what causes a ECU to lock? These ECU's dont have a limit on flashing....

Executor: The E46 M3 ecu has a limited number of writes before the ecu 'locks'. It is a feature built into the ecu by Bmw. Check Mambas link for details.

So... I just went for a drive in this car. I saw it a few months ago when it first came to Burgy's place. Then it was running a MAF sensor and the plumbing was a nightmare. Car kept stalling, erratic idle and other issues.

The owner is actually my cousin's girlfriend's uncle... if that makes sense. He knew I was supercharging my M3 and had told my cousin about his issues and wanted to know more about how I was planning on getting my car working. He told my cousin about how the car just wasn't driving right, constantly dying etc. I then proceeded to tell my cousin that the owner needs to send the car to Burgy... many months went by and nothing... until now. He finally brought the car to Burgy and well... today, she drove pretty well. This thing hauls ass when it comes on boost. There are still a few issues that Burg will undoubtedly sort out...

I tried shooting some videos of it with my shitty iPhone, but the camera and mic are buggered on it and nothing of worth was shot... SO I will have to pull out the real camera and do a reshoot... but I must say, I am impressed with this alpha N base file that burgy has put onto the car. I will admit, I had my doubts. I wasn't so sure this aplha N would work first time, but I admit, I was wrong. Three days ago this car would not start, now she's running and boosting. The car just keeps pulling like mad. Very addictive feeling. JUST CANNOT WAIT TO BOOST JEZEBEL NOW.... and the sound this car makes when dumping is awesome!!!

Well done Burgs! You sir, are a mad scientist.

I would be very worried about taking this on Given the history of the car you have no idea what kind of nonsense can be going on with it...

glad you got it sorted :)

Here is a little sneak peak video to show you guys how the car drives with the first Alpha N base file. I was very impressed to see it run smoothly with no hiccups.

AS I said earlier, this car ran like shit 6 months back.

Here she is...

Excuse me for the doffnes. Doesnt Alpha N run maffless?

Yes... I think my original description on youtube was vague. I have edited it. Thanks.

Burgy, you can explain what you guys have done to make the car work. My job is complete.

Yes, Alpha N MAF-less. Think there was a very long discussion on what exactly the Alpha N tune entails and how the reading to the car's ECU does not check for the amount of air passing a single point but rather runs certain adaptions depending on your driving style (something in that line).
