E36 M3 Gearbox oil

Howzit guys. So I am busy with my car doing some repairs replace clutch, propshaft diff seal and diff bushes, brakes and so on
Change the gearbox oil also, there is a big sticker on the gearbox that states ATF oil only. When I drained the oil it was definitely not ATF.
ATF oil is red. This oil was very black. I check in the service book for history of previous service and invoices to see what oil was used butt see anything.
If I search other forums it is clear that ATF should be used DEXRON II if I am right.. So that is my question to you guys out there.
What oil is the best for the gearbox.

I run Castrol Syntrans 75w90 in my ZF box that states ATF fluid only, as per A-Team Racing that did my manual swap. They run it in their race cars as well.

Thanks for reply Bud. I filled mine with ATF now . Have to get more info on this. Don't want to mess up the box.

ATF is correct for the box
75w90 is too thick an oil for it.

I finished up the car the past weekend and must say... The gearbox is much smoother with the ATF oil..
