Difference between the e36 316i and 318i ?

Hey there

I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between the 316i and 318i?

As far as I know the interiors are the same and they both have 1800 engines... is it maybe just a software mapping change on the engines?

im not sure but i think the 316i has 8 valves... if not the difference will still be in the head

My E36 316i had the M40 Engine.. My E46 318i has M43

The M40 316i (1800) is 8 Valve 85Kw
The M43 318i (1900) is also 8 Valve 87Kw

But you must have had an old 316 pre 1995?
The e36 316 had the M43B18 motor - 1995 to 1998. Unlike the E46 318 (M43TUB19) it did not have the twin balancer shafts and had a metal intake manifold whereas the E46 318 had plastic.

316i had 85 kw and 318i 16 valve had 103 kw , 318iS had a 1900 cc 16 valve with 103 kw but better torque .There were numerous road tests in Car and Topcar magazine from 1992 till 1998 with differences noted .
