BMW Vin number thread

Ok i found out that vin numbers Starting with WBA- refers to BMW germany and those that start with ABM- refer to BMW South Africa.

My question comes here, my E90 i presume was built in S.A, which it should, but this car starts with a WBA vin, but i have seen a car i was interested in buying with an ABM vin. What vin does your car have? (any model)

And does anybody know what the difference is between these two vins?

I don't think your information is correct. Our 1999 E46 328i's VIN starts with WBA and it is most certainly built in RSA. Even some of the stickers on the car is in Afrikaans :rollsmile:

Interesting... I've seen E90's in the showroom (with the board detailing all the options on the car) with W vin numbers..

I was surprised, cause I knew about the W and A vin number story..

Btw vin numbers are allocated according to an ISO specification. Amongst other things the first letter indicates the country of origin..

Yip my E90 is definitely built in SA also, and has WBA vin, but i have seen an E36 325 vert with a vin starting with ABM.
