BMW e70 X5 tow bar wiring question

Hi Guys,

I just purchased a 3.0d E70 X5 without a tow bar.

Managed to source a factory tow bar from a scrapyard without the wiring. Question is this, 7 pin plug, can I tap straight into the the lights at the back or will it cause errors?

I've read about a relay box that can be fitted - if needs be, does anyone know where in Jhb one can be purchased?

Sash, thanks for the reply, it says that it does have the prep. Any ideas where to find this on the vehicle?

My experience with fitting tow bars to my E60 530d and my 2005 X3 is that you cannot just connect the wiring to the lights as per the usual on a 1990 car. You have to have the electrical box with the wiring that leads into and out of it and then you have to figure out which wire goes where, etc. Go to you local Hi-Q or Supaquick and ask if they can help you with the wiring or if they do not want to help, ask if they can order you the control module for your car. The guys here in Hermanus at Hi-Q seemed willing to get me the module with the wiring for about R1.5k (without labour). I was fortunate in that i got part of a tow bar from Gert at OBDWorx a few years back which came off a E90 and it had the electrical box complete with the gooseneck and the part where it fits into the tow bar but without the tow bar itself. I made my own tow bar which i copied off my son's X3 and wired it with the E90 stuff and it works. My assumption is that "any" BMW car tow bar wiring module could work for the older cars, not sure if it will work on the E70 if it is not a E70 specific module. Hope this helps?? Just now remembered that Gizmo (on the Forum) has a complete tow bar for a E53 X5 complete with module and wiring. I would buy that off him for about R2k and use what i need if i were you.
