Sadly, most would look at this and say - why buy an older car without any Plan left, when I can buy a newer used car with a 40% balloon...

The smart question is whether a 40% balloon will cost less than the potential maintenance costs on the older car, over the finance term.

If you have more budget, like R150k more you can likely get performance cars still under OEM plan (warranty, service plan, maintenance plan).

The cons out-weight the pro's when it comes to buying a car on balloon payment.

We've even created an article going into detail about balloon payments and why they suck. Now having said that, I've personally bought a car on balloon and while I never took a financial loss while I had the car, at the end of the day I also had no equity in the car when I sold it. So I basically paid a premium to drive a car hassle-free for 4 years. It was my 2013 Ford Fiesta ST - don't regret it though, but won't do it again in a hurry or advise someone else to do it.
