So I managed to grab myself Rozey the gal of my dreams from Karsh330d (Thank you Karsh) :=): She's a fine example of a clean car you'll rarely find an e36 sooo clean. :smilebounce:

So I immediately to her Gizmo for some Gizmo touch :tiptoe:

A lot of good things are about to happen to her including M52B25 --> M52B28 conversion.

Why not go 3.0l? Find an e46 330i sub-assembly and swap that in. The effort and cost involved in the m52b28 doesn't justify the gains.

330i sub assembly doesn't just swap in. Completely different engine block and engine all together. The M52B28 conversion is very much well worth it, it's so simple to do and produces a boatload of low down torque. This is a daily driven street car, the m52B28 is the perfect motor for such duties. It will be mated to a 6spd gearbox too for better highway gas mileage.

FYI M54B30 and M52B28 make the same power at the wheels on the rollers here in jhb. The 2.8 makes more torque on the wheels in fact.

Congrats on the car!

You are going to devalue a neat original car by changing the engine!

Those cars are hard to find, and one in a neat original condition is even rarer!

Do it to another car.

I will never sell the car...at least that's how I see it know.

Very awesome car, congrats, I myself would love an e36 Motorsport, techno violet for me:thumbs:
Hope she gives you many miles and smiles

I don't want to derail the thread or dirty it, but I personally think swapping to a b28 really isn't an issue, it's plug and play, no funny "converting or conversions" going on, and the engine car from these chassis and models so it still will be like from the factory, especially with gizmo doing it. Also who in there right mind would pick a 323i over a 328i if given the opurtunity? Change the brakes and whatever else and you have a 328i. Done and dusted. I think if it's done well and documented there should be no problem if re sold in the future. Do it! If the difference is like an e46 325i to 330i then it's a no brainer!

Good luck!

I am considering a similar thing with my e34 530i/5 wanting to go to 540i/b40/6.....

It will still look neat and original, all my work will be under the skin. The original motor has 250 000km and might be down on compression, will confirm this first. The new motor has less than 100 000km on it and running fantastic, old motor can be put aside to keep numbers matching if you so inclined. What im going to be doing is adding value all over and building the perfect e36 daily.

Yash, I came past your s2000 on kyalami back straight with the motor, you know it's sweet. ;)

Just for the record, I got nothing against Gizmo or the quality of the particular engine in question being put in...

Sure it will be faster.

In 30 years time a 323i Motorsport with 350 000km and fairly neat will hold more prestige to a collector than a 323i Motorsport which has a 328i engine in.

Like a 325iS now with a 328i stroker engine etc.... sure it’s faster than the original, but people now will take an original high mileage 325iS than one with a non original engine.

People want a 328i motorsport and settle for the 323i instead as the 328i individual is fast becoming a rare and sought after ride. Why not create what the the owner wanted from the start? The car can be reversed back to original and sold for decent money, the x35i sections have shown us that...this car has too high a mileage to keep it stock and original.

So I did a hot compression test on the motor, it's toast! One cylinder has good compression, two are iffy and three are terrible. I performed the test 3 times with these same results:
1. 92
2. 90
3. 128
4. 163
5. 90
6. 132

So the 328i engine swap was given the go-ahead.

This has to be the most original E36 I have ever worked on, the only things that have been changed through her 20years/250 000km were spark plugs, air filter, belts and oil. Everything else still has the 1998 date stamp on it.

Very nice find. All the best with the swap.
Gizmo's standard of work is awesome, can wait to see the progress:praise:

@gizmo what is the symptoms of a toast motor as you said?

My car started on the turn, idled quietly, never used a drop of oil or water between a service.

How would your average person know their motor is toast?

The car sometimes battles to start, you can hear as it's turning over that it isn't making compression. Compression test results don't lie, either way the motor would need to be stripped down to determine the exact cause of the multiple low cylinders. Collapsed rings would be my guess, maybe blown head gasket between cyl 1 and cyl 2.
Maybe toast is the wrong word but it will need rebuilding regardless.

Yeah if you going to have to go through all that effort, just drop in the 328i motor in the thing :D

What did the car come to you for originally?

Is the transplant a solution to a problem the car had or is it something the owner wanted to do from the start?
