diesel sound

Dear all. My 2004 316i starts fine and idles fine. When I rev past 1500 rpm, it sounds like a diesel car, and even if revs drops back to normal, the sound stays. If I turn off the engine and start again, it idles fine until I touch the gas pedal. Mechanic is clueless. Oil is OK, chain and...
