Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
Hello all, hoping you can provide some insight. I currently have a 2015 320i Msport which I love but maybe time for a change? I would love a 340i and love the m sport look, however almost all second hand come with 19inch rims. Would it be possible to take a car with m sport package and put on standard 17 inch rims, I think would be 225/50 17's? Not sure how much the firm ride is affected by suspension and how much on tires. I want to get closer to the more standard ride of the 340i but look of the m sport ( except for the look of the rim obviously).
Many thanks!

WithStu other than the fact 17s will looks terrible on a msport f30, putting down 240kw on a rear tyre with a 225 section is not going to provide the best grip, the smallest wheel I would suggest is the msport 18s that come with 225/45 fronts and 255/40 rears (not 100% sure on this)

I assume you looking for comfortable ride?, I suggest the adaptive suspension optionThumbs

RE: Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
Thanks Riaad. Correct looking for a more comfortable ride. Drove in a friends E90 335i on Friday. He is running standard 225/50 17, when he planted foot from standstill after the rain my 320 with 255/40 18 would have been way better so I get what you are saying but I am not a robot to robot kind of guy. Love the silky pull of the 6 cylinder and the ride was significantly better than my 18's. the 17's should be less prone to pothole damage?
Also less tire noise.....

RE: Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
Hey bud. The 3 series rides quite well on the 19s as long as you drive mostly on the highway. If you drive on uneven roads or back roads it is a bit firm but that is due to the Run flats. Dropping at tyre size won't affect the ride that much because at the end of the day you'll still be using a run flat tire. I suggest you take one for a drive first before deciding.

anything less than 18's on an M-sport look lost. Even thats pushing it. 19's are perfect. If you're concerned about ride comfort, try some non-runflats, as suggested.

RE: Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
18s should be fine, anything smaller and I would not be comfortable knowing how close the rim is to the front caliper...

Try soft compound tyres, they won't last long on a 340i but should be more comfortable.

Out of curiosity, why buy a F series 340i now? The G series is practically here, better to wait a bit.. My 2c Thumbs

Yip have thought of that but the money will be out my budget I am afraid. I didn't think of the front caliper distance to rim to be honest. So consensus is to try the 18's and then if necessary go for a softer compound. Thanks for the input all!

RE: Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
To be honest the ride comfort on the F30 with 19s is actually very good. My non-msport e90 has 17s and the ride quality is the same if not better on the F30.
On the other hand, the 125i has 18s and yoh that's a stiff ride.

RE: Rim and tire change for a 340i Msport
I saw brand new F30 340i at JSN last week.
It was in standard trim (no Luxury, sport, msport badging) and it came with 17s all round.
So, yes, the 340i can handle 17s (I think 225s all round).

Remember that most of the high performance V8 BMWs from the 90s (540i, 740i, 750iL) all came either with 16s or 17s as standard. If you are not tearing up the bends everyday all day long, 17s are more than adequate.

I am riding on 18s and I had sampled a 320d on 17s (before I bought my car). I can tell you that the 17s do feel better on poor tarred roads.

My advice, if you need comfort and want msport looks, - go for the 17s but paint them black to allow them to blend in with the tyres...

My biggest concern with 17" wheels on an Msport would be the ground clearance.I can only imagine how that car will scrape every incline and decline, especially given the design of the front splitters Hammerhead

If the style 403's don't work, go for a different BMW wheel or even aftermarket with non-runflats. Don't go 17" on a Msport - there is a reason BMW offered 18" as the standard wheel size on the F30 Msport.. Also it would look kak, IMO.

Suspension setup is different on an Msport. 17s may not work very well.

Bringing out my tyre+ wheel calculator in Excel...

A 225/50 17 vs a 255/40 18 (standard on rear axle of M sport) - the full 225 17 wheel (incl alloy + tyre) diameter is only 0.7% under (about 4mm). This will hardly affect the ground clearance.

If comparing the 225/50 17 to the M sport standard front axle wheels (225/45 18), the diameter difference drops further to 0.4% (about 3mm).

So, the higher rubber profile of the 17s make up for the lack of alloy inches.
