Was I Flim-Flammed by BMW? - LukeHawk - 16-05-2017 07:28 AM

Hey guys, so when I was messing around with my tyres this weekend, cleaning, etc.. I noticed something strange. 3 out of my 4 19" Msport tyres look normal, with the ///M badge sort of "pushed in" to a cutout in the rim.. as seen below
[Image: 20170514_162915_20170516072321858_3747977502.jpg]

But one of the rims is not like the others. The ///M badge seems to be one of those stickers, and not indented. And there were other very tiny almost missable discrepancies that I can't remember off-hand.

I can't get any more pictures right now, as I'm at work.

Is one of my rims a fake? The car was sold to me pre-owned from SMG in Durban.

If one rim is a rep then Im sure the used car dealers at SMG wouldn't have picked it up when the previous owner traded the car in like that.

Remove the wheel and check the inside for BMW markings.

i dont think you get replicas of these wheels, on a side note, bmw does tend to get the wheels refurbed...sometimes even on brand new carsTiptoe

Could be, best is to take the rim off and look on the inside for the markings...can compare them to one of the others if you unsure

Yeah I'll do that when I get home today, thanks.

If it is the case, do I have any legal grounds to get an OEM one from SMG?

You can try...but it will probably be a fruitless attempt.

I have never seem a replica of those wheels, but it might be a rep. Or as someone previously mentioned,it might have been refurbished which would likely be the cause of some minor discrepancies.

If it turns out to be a rep, you can try to speak to the DP. Don't get your hopes up tho.

I doubt you get reps of this wheel. See the stamps on the inside of the wheel

RE: Was I Flim-Flammed by BMW? - WyKiD - 16-05-2017 09:26 AM

Best would be to check the inside of the wheel, if your car was still on m/p when you bought it than it would have needed to pass the quality check for the transfer. Pretty sure you could pursue it from that perspective...

The rim was most probably refurbished.

403m reps are out there guys...

Only learnt about that when i wanted to get rid of my 193's.

Monte Carlo wheels in edenvale are selling em. I was getting a good deal with rft tyres. Just assumed they were oem- i looked closer and then on the inside- realised they were reps and then walked away.

Yes definitely as well as the 442M - Seen them in person. Also seen reps of my 345M M5 wheels.

Hmm you guys are making me worry! I must check when I get a chance

I would say you do since BMW will 'officially' cancel your plan for having non-OEM rims on the car if you had fitted reps yourself. First step is to confirm the wheel is in fact a rep.

When I bought the car it was still under plan, just not anymore. And I can prove it. So if it's the case I will definitely at least try to do something about it.
But yes, before I jump the gun I must just look.

That really sucks ... If it is a Rep.. Also means WHAT happened to the RIM/Suspension that would need it to be replaced Sad

RE: Was I Flim-Flammed by BMW? - graan13 - 16-05-2017 12:16 PM

I would think that the rim more likely has been referb'd, even perhaps by the dealer. Then the sticker bit has been replaced with an aftermarket type you can/could buy for about R100.00 for 4.

RE: Was I Flim-Flammed by BMW? - LukeHawk - 16-05-2017 05:53 PM

Ok I didn't get a chance to take the wheel off and check today, but upon closer inspection...

[Image: img_20170516_175013_3601355040.jpg] (normal on left. the one logo is inverted because I flipped the image)

There seems to be no indentation at all for the //M sticker. And the BMW badge protrudes more than the other badges. When I first got the car I remember noting that that particular BMW badge was looser than the rest as well, and I actually put a bit of glue on it to keep it in.

Something seems fishy here guys.. why would a refurbished rim be this different

RE: Was I Flim-Flammed by BMW? - cOlDFuSiOn - 16-05-2017 06:03 PM

This is sad.. Could the face have been cut down, from the pic it almost looks like it was shaved down to recreate the diamond cut look? If not it is likely a rep. Again question is.. What happened to the original/what potential other damage is on the car? If the original was so bad..
