Apple Airplay in my Car!
Hi guys,

So, with all those crappy bluetooth adapters out there, and even though i would like an android radio, i dont use my car enough to warrant it.
So, managed to get an Apple Airport Express, gen 1 & 2. The plan is to use the Gen 2, and have the 1 as a spare or sell it or give it to my bro.

Found this blog:
https://bmn.name/post/2013/06/01/airplay-enabled-car/

So, you wont be able to see the songs on your radio, but the quality will be CD quality, and thats more than good enough for me as i just want spotify. Also, this gets rid of cables and with an iphone, no aux, meh.

making some progress.
First test! got the 1st gen and 2nd gen devices.
testing 1st gen:

testing 2nd gen:

so following the blog, making some changes.
The blog has the usb hardwired to the board, we are going to try using a printer port and usb. Making it extendable and also easier to use/remove.

Found a location to place the express.
it wont fit in the media pouch.

Removed the pouch, going to get 3M lock tape and use that under the arm rest and on the express.
Plan is also to wrap/spray the express black, thus making it invisible in the car.

I could lift the centre console and place it there. but im lazy. and this just seems easier to use/remove the device when i want to.

RE: Apple Airplay in my Car!
shew, forgot to update this.

got the device all sorted.
got some 3M locktape and put it under.

place it under the arm rest, put some black carbon fibre look vinyl i had lying around.
then when arm rest was down, it was a bit too tall so it knocked.

Decided next place was under the passenger seat. i was lazy to remove the centre console.

got a decent 2 port 2.4amp usb charger. the white cable i replaced for a better aux cable. got some slack to the cables.

and all works well.

the system takes around 20s to boot up.
so as the car warms up to temp, the wifi kicks in, phone connects, select airplay. boom, crystal clear quality.

had some issues going over bumps but rarely. so far, for the costs, i am a happy chappy.

ordered this off ebay - bluetooth steering remote for cheap. should help with forward or back on songs. use my apple watch but thats a bit annoying or i have the phone in a holder and always on. both works well.

Wow very nice! Just wondering what the advantage of this is over a Bluetooth to aux adapter? I guess sound quality will not be as good, anything else?

i tried the bluetooth aux adapter. everytime you leave the car, the reconnecting is a headache. each time i had to forget device and reconnect. also the quality over bluetooth was not very good.

Does the avantree have to be charged alot? does it turn itself off when you leave the car?

I just leave it charging permanently, it died after 2 days of constant use. It does go off when you switch off but after a few minutes. Then you need to switch on everytime you start the car. It is annoying but for the price and without USB, it served it's purpose.
