TS_ F30 320i
Hi guys. I've been on the forum now for the past 5 months and I've enjoyed getting the extra knowledge and seeing everybody's builds. With that said, here's the story of my first BMW.

In 2017 the wife and I decided to get a BMW F30. Initially looked at a basic spec for a while but nothing ignited my passion. Almost took a 2013 Sportline with 32,000km but the piano black trim looked like a scratch hazard. I walked back into the showroom and there it was...

[Image: 20170808_123702_2473590895.jpg][Image: 20170808_123653_9567653592.jpg]

So it's M Sport, about a year's worth of plan remaining (at the time), with 55,000km on the clock but the down side was that it was R50,000 over budget. I had to go home to think about it. Needless to say, on my birthday I went an collected it!

A week later I purchased my first M performance lip and boot spoiler from S n I. I had it sprayed white along with a fibre glass spoiler which I ended up taking off as it wasn't quite to my liking.

[Image: 20170919_200127_2976495176.jpg][Image: 20180114_184403_3651575488.jpg]

Under M/plan:
• I replaced the brake discs and pads at around 80,000km under plan.
• I've done all scheduled services about 1000kms before warnings (before knowing better)
• Spark plugs were also replaced.

Outside of plan:
March 2018 my plan expired due to mileage and I was ready to have a little bit of fun.
• April 2018 I gave the guys at SR Speedworks a call and they loaded their Pro-Tune. On the Dyno my car went from 126wkw to 176wkw and just under 380nm.
• I also got them to upgrade to the EBC brake pads.
• Scheduled oil service at BMW.

Some of the work I can remember:

• Double slatted grills,
• OEM carbon mirror caps,
• replaced the lip after it hit a gate track and cracked,
• 19" M3 Rep wheels with Radar Dimax rubber,
• Replaced my fog lights with xenon units with balasts,
• fitted a carbon fibre rear spoiler,
• I also fitted a carbon M Performance exhaust tip,
• M Performance side skirt Vinyl and front splitters were also wrapped in carbon vinyl.
• Full exterior detail and ceramic coating.

I still plan on doing quite a bit on the car in the pursuit of uniqueness and fun. Some people are into sports, I've got thus thing for this car. I'll keep record of all additional mods and work on this post.

This was pretty much my journey until November 2018. I'll post the rest of it when I get a bit more time in the next few days...

Thanks bud. I'm sure if you start exploring the options for yours you'll love it more than when you first got it!

Thanks Mr_Y.

1. The best I got on short trips on the freeway in eco pro was about 8,2l/100km. So not too bad.
2. Ride us still decent. I made the mistake of buying runflats so it's quite harsh when I hit an unexpected or even expected change in surface level too fast. I plan on getting non RFTs with a 5mm increase in profile for my next set. At least I can say I'm more aware of road surfaces since.

RE: TS_ F30 320i
Your car looks great. the lower lip looks better in black.

With my wife's car going off plan, I am thinking of doing a little mod to increase power, throttle response and potentially how the exhaust sounds. Where did you do your software updates?

My brother has just bought himself a RS7, I have never paid attention to Audi till then. that thing sounds superb. obviously I wont get the same but would like to at least move towards that kind of exhaust music.

Current:
2014 320i F30 - M-Sport (Mrs)
2012 3.0d F25 - M-Sport (Family Wagon)
2005 325ci E46 - M-Sport (Mr)
2003 330ci E46 - Weekend (Mr)

Previous BMWs:
2012 328i F30 - Powerful racy motor
2012 320i E90 - Solid built, disappointing performance
2010 3.0d E70 - Versatile car, strong diesel motor
2004 320i E46 - Built like a tank, superb motor
2003 320i E46 - Money pit, lemon of note

I personally prefer the white. I should spray this lip white again soon. It just adds something for me.

Have you decided to keep it? I'm sure the 328i should make for a great drive with a tune. Have you looked into the timing guides yet? That's a bugger I'd recommend prior to modding (I wish I knew this). SR Speedworx in Germiston. I think they do a good job of the software. I have to admit that I'm not too happy with the throttle response but I feel it could possibly be down to the gearbox. Rogue Performance have done some really good work on the N20s exhausts. Here's one - https://www.instagram.com/p/Bk9iEbfhiND/...v7ptyzmiwr

I can't say that I've heard one but I'm sure it does a good job.

Great looking car, the progression from day one is impressive Thumbs .

Was under the impression the 320i isn't a good candidate for tuning because the higher compression ratio (compared to the 328i) limits how much you can increase the boost. Or maybe this is only an issue on the N20, is yours the B48?

Current;

2001 E46 330Ci Coupe (best car ever!!)
2002 E65 745i (best car when it works properly!!)

Thanks Steph. Mine's an N20. I done quite a lot of reading about the differences between the two before I done the software. It's quite a decent candidate. The only difference between the two is the compression ratio and the pistons. So it may not quite go the extent of being as great as a 328i with a stock engine but it's still something that runs well quite reliably. I know some people are going the extent of forged internals with rediculous results - Easily 335 and m3 territory. But that's just next level.

I think the important thing would be to ensure that the engine is running at 100% condition first.

Haha. With power comes responsibility. I wish i could thrash it constantly, but limits will help it last longer. BTW - I've already rebuilt my motor so I think I'm talking from that perspective.

RE: TS_ F30 320i
To adequately update my showroom thread since the last post (long story short version):

In November 2018 the infamous timing guides story hit home. Driving one afternoon and on acceleration I heard a loud click sound, the engine bogged down and it was immediately down on power. The drivetrain message popped up and I kid you not, I almost soiled my pants. I pulled the car to the side of the road and waited a few minutes before trying to crank her up again. On start up, the engine shuddered, kept shuddering and then two messages popped up. Stop/start failure, then drivetrain error.

I had the car towed to Auto Glen BMW and had them diagnose the car. They mentioned that I had lost compression on 2 cylinders and a few other things I can't bare to remember right now. Proposed repair would be to replace the shortblock, then sundries at about 60% of what I paid for the car... I'm sitting at around 117,000km at this point after deciding not to extend MP because it sounded pointless to spend so much on extending the plan.

Needless to say that I towed it away again. Decided to bring it home until I decided what to do with it.

2 posts that will explain the details of happenings since:

https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=88849

At the point where I was satisfied with the rebuild I bought a 2nd hand catback off a 335i. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Car sounds very good at this stage. A slight crackle and pop now and then but nothing over the top. The exhaust note's also manned up a bit, with a slightly deeper note which I'm happy with. And that throttle blip.. Wasn't too sure anymore if I wanted a DP anymore but figured I'll decide later. I'll load a video at some point

I also decided to get some new wheels - 20" BMW style 356 I found by chance online. I had never seen them on an F30 at this point and figured they'd look good. Just need a good refurb and maybe a colour change to keep my black and white theme going.

Fitted them on a rental I had before buying them:

Unfortunately tragedy hit again before I could even get them refurbed.

RE: TS_ F30 320i
So after all the research I done and asking around I decided to spend a few bucks on CP Pistons and an oversized racing gasket from them for the rebuild. The pistons are 84.5mm and 9.5:1 CR. Gasket is 1.6mm if I remember correctly. Ordered in June 2019 and they finally arrived at the end of September. Glad I didn't hold my breath.

While I waited I also managed to get a 2nd hand Rogue Performance DP from someone on the forum. Looking forward to hearing how that will pair up with the catback.

The bores have been resleeved, conrod polished, the head's been skimmed and the cylinder head has been completely overhauled again. I was present today to see the guy helicoil the threads. Quite a process - dagger to the heart when you see a guy go at your block with a drill. BlueCry

Fixes that were done which will be carried over to the build are:

New Timing guides and chains,
New HPFP,
New Fuel injectors,
New oil pump.

Still need to buy new head bolts (really wish I could've gone head stud route, but money bro) and I hope that that will be the end of my shopping list before everything starts coming together.

I went with the lower CR Pistons because, contrary to most reading I've done on differences between N20A and N20B, I found that my engine already had the 10:1 CR Pistons as opposed to 11:1 CR. I reckon that this should make the engine slightly more reliable once I get back to moding it again.

I plan on detuning back to stock to run the engine in for a few thousand km. And then see where we go from there. Hopefully I don't lose too much power with the lower compression now. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does thereafter. Exciting times...

RE: TS_ F30 320i
Thanks @T-dogg

@Danny@DSCmotorsport It will. The question is by how much? I'm not too concerned about the power loss for now. I'll eventually get it tuned again and that's where the lower compression pistons will play their role. I just want to get it running and allow it to settle a bit ( if that opinion has any truth to it). If I do end up keeping the car the CP Pistons would only be the beginning of the mechanical mods.

Reading through this thread and the other two I just.... BlueCry

So BMW knows about these problems and they are doing something in Murica but not here, same as the AUDI High oil consumption thing as well. This process seems to be very expensive to say the least let alone tiring emotional, physically and spiritually.

I really hope you get it sorted man. You have some serious fight in you because I would have found a tree long ago and written the thing off.

Good luck with the build and really hope you get to boost the F8ck out of it when all is done.

Thanks @dirtydeedsman

For some reason I've got a thing for this F30. Maybe it's cause it's my first BM?

I just wish I had a half descent service advisor for my last service in plan because this thing started cluttering then, and that was one of my comments on handing it over that morning. They know all about it but we don't quite have the legal muscle, or ability to come together enough locally to make these big corporates take note.

Thanks bud. I've come this far, it just has to come right. I've stopped counting how much I spent. My heart's taken over for a little while longer. Fencelook
