328i oil advice
Hi guys.

Need to service my 328i, need some advice on what oil to use.

Many people have recommended castrol magnatec or any other 10w40 oil.

My problem is my 328i has the alloy block with about 180000km. Now with all these early problems with the alloy blocks, nikasil and bad quality fuel (in the earlier days), i suppose my bores would a slight bit more wear than normal, What i have noticed is the thinner the oil i use, the quicker it gets burned up.

I was considering using shell helix high mileage, which is a 25w60, but this is the only oil that seems to last in the motor, plus it has good engine cleaning properties from what i hear.

What i basically need to know is can this oil be used in this motor with any ill effects to the motor, vanos, etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks.....

Castrol SLX Proffesional. I swear by it. Good for all BMW, if I remember correctly. Just ensure your car has used synthetic from day one. NEVER EVER switch from synthetic to mineral and vice versa, keep with what your car has been using. Otherwise you could lose seals and bearings. IMHO.

RE: 328i oil advice
I just did an oil service on my 328i yesterday and they used ordinary Castrol GTX (i usually top up with Magnatec). When asked about the quality of the oil I was told that it was the right oil for the car and that my oil consumption is normal (500ml every 1000kms).

Cost of service was just over R900 at Zeemax.

.... still searching for the perfect replacement BlueCry

GTX, the white bottle? I'm sure you should be using a fully sunthetic oil such as SLX Pro that James mentioned

I did have the same experience last Dec. at Zeemax. The part manager wanted to use some Helix Diesel (Mineral based) something. We had a bit of a tiff on the workshop floor as I insisted on the SLX and he believed the Helix is cheaper. Excuse me for being pedantic (anal) but I AM a fanatic afterall, and I AM paying for the stuff.

RE: 328i oil advice
A Nikasil plating is 0.03 mm thick at best, it's insanely thin but very very durable.

If your engine is running well then the bores are ok

RE: 328i oil advice
BMW recommends Castrol. it says so on the oil cap.
Also Magnatec is almost as old as a 1996 328i.
So I use Maganatec.

I find SLX to thin for older high mileage engines.

Think about it. You run "thicker" oil for 150 000km now change to a "thinner" oil.... the pars in the engine wore out (and were designed) to a oil clearance meant for the "thicker" oil.

I suggest SLX for M cars from the beginning of the engine's life.
I saw Leo Haese Centurion put SLX in our company's X5sd

But...... I am no engineer or chemical expert.

RE: 328i oil advice
Hi

I my opinion I will not put any oil thicker than a 10W40 in my car, unless the engine is at the end of its life.

Thinking Magnatec 10W40 will be good for the older BMW's.

I like using shell oil in my cars and never had any problems.

25w60 in my opinion will kill the engine very quickly!!!

RE: 328i oil advice
Hi guys.

I was reading the owners manual. According to that, you use different grades according to your climate. If you live where there is a hot climate, then you supposed to use a thicker oil. If you live in a colder climate, then you must use a thinner oil. I think the logic behind this is that in a hot climate, the thicker oil will remain close to original spec, while a thinner oil might become too thin. In a colder climate, the thicker oil will probably start sludging up, while the thinner oil will remain close to spec. According to the temperature scale, i should be using either 20w50 or 15w50.

Im sure they would not put something totally false in the owners manual?

Would theyIono

RE: 328i oil advice
I've noticed oil is short in my car, should I top up with Shell Helix 10W-40 which is fully synthetic or Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 which is part Synthetic Thinking
