paint care inbetween details - Tjoppies - 14-05-2019 09:48 AM

so i want to keep my paint in top top condition inbetween details.

would like some insight into the following:

1. Foam Cannon - do you need a specific product to create the foam or do you use your car shampoo

2. Foam Cannon - can you use your wash mit to wash the car while it's foamed up

3. clay bar - does it remove any polish/wax/glaze that has been applied during previous detail

4. if you do use a claybar , do you have to follow it up with a polish and wax afterwards

I'm no professional detailer but here's my 2c

1. Foam Cannon - do you need a specific product to create the foam or do you use your car shampoo

Yes, you require a specific product for a Foam cannon, you can use car shampoo but it may not create enough foam and have the same effect.

2. Foam Cannon - can you use your wash mit to wash the car while it's foamed up

No, Generally the specific foam cannon shampoo you use is supposed to remove most of the dirt on it own and it a bit more harsher than normal car shampoo but it is still PH balanced and safe for Waxes/Sealants.
when doing the proper steps you spray the car down with water, spray your foam, then spray off the foam and then wash the car with a mit using the 2 bucket method.

3. clay bar - does it remove any polish/wax/glaze that has been applied during previous detail

Yes clay bar can remove polish/wax/glaze and leave spots where contaminants have been removed unprotected.

4. if you do use a claybar , do you have to follow it up with a polish and wax afterwards.

Yes, in order to fill in the spots where the claybar removed the polish/wax/glaze.
Though I would recommend only claybar if you plan on redoing the whole car and then sealing it up again with a Sealant//wax.

1. My preference is to use a shampoo that is either a dedicated foam wash, or at least one that has no waxes in it as it might eventually block up the foam cannon

2. Honestly it depends on how dirty the car is, but i wouldn't recommend it as above

3. If your polish, wax is doing its job then there should be no need for claying. If theres a need to clay then you need to consider where the wax or sealant is in its longevity.

4. Most clay bars will cause slight marring, which is fine if you are polishing the car afterwards. I wouldn't recommend claying unless you are doing the whole process of polishing and sealing.

If you have embedded contaminants on just a small area then it i would treat that area with specialised products. A good example is insects and tar, i prefer to use specialised products and consider reapplying sealant or wax sooner. Other things like bird poo need to be cleaned off as soon as possible, a quick detailer or apc solution will work well

in that case i'll leave the clay bar jobbie for when i get it detailed again in July.

wanna go get some nice Meguiars shampoo again at macro this weekend and add a pressure washer/foam cannon in the mix.

there are quite a few shampoo's available , how do i pick 1?

If you’re in JHB go speak to the guys at Crazy Detailer.

Epic advice and service from them. Well priced too.

The karcher one is not as good as the foam cannon. It does produce foam, but not as thick as the foam cannon.

You end up having to use more product to get a similar foam compared to using the foam cannon

You're in luck Auto Dna is getting foam cannons tomorrow so check their site http://www.auto-dna.co.za

Much as Sash said, DO NOT claybar a detailed car, as I take so,e sort of protection was put on the car after the detail, so really in 2 3 weeks there shouldn’t be anything on the paint that need claying, as it will defeat the point as to why you detailed the car in the first place, but the rest is quite ok to do

1. Rinse
2. Wash the car in shampoo of your choice (preferably 2 bucket wash)
3. Rinse
4. Dry with a premium drying towel
5. Use a spray sealant (less constant on paint) or a wax

Hope that helps
